Khun Thale Swamp / Lake is a large natural wetland and one of the most important ecological areas in Surat Thani, covering over 1,270 rai. It serves as a water retention basin and helps regulate the city’s climate, while also connecting to local canals and the Tapi River, forming a rich open ecosystem.

The surrounding area has been developed into a spacious public park, thoughtfully divided into exercise zones, relaxation areas, and conservation zones. A major highlight is the 15-kilometer loop for jogging and cycling, with clearly separated lanes for safety, making it ideal for runners, cyclists, and families.

For a deeper experience, each side of the lake offers a different atmosphere:

• West side: lively area with restaurants, cafés, and popular sunset viewpoints
• East side: quiet and peaceful, ideal for relaxation and birdwatching
• North side: great for photography, especially the curved cycling track
• South side: water activity zone and local community area

One of the must-do activities is kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, mainly available on the southern side of the lake. The best time is after 4:30 PM, when the water is calm, the wind is light, and the lighting is perfect for both beginners and photographers.

For nature lovers, this is a key birdwatching destination in southern Thailand, especially known for the Purple Swamphen (locally called "Nok I-Kong"), commonly found in the grassy wetlands on the southeast side, particularly between 6:00–8:00 AM. Other species include egrets, kingfishers, and migratory birds during the cool season (November–February).

Popular photo spots include:

• Sunset viewpoint on the west side (panoramic reflections on the water)
• Curved cycling track on the north side (lifestyle photography)
• Grassy wetland areas on the east side (nature and bird photography)

Visitors should note that some areas are protected breeding grounds for aquatic life, so it is important to avoid disturbing wildlife and not litter in the area.

The best time to visit is December to April, when the weather is clear and suitable for outdoor activities. Evenings are especially beautiful, with golden sunlight reflecting across the calm lake surface.

• Best time to visit is 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM for cooler weather and sunset views

• Birdwatchers should visit early morning and bring binoculars
