“The legendary broken-sword battlefield of Phraya Phichai, featuring a peaceful rural atmosphere located close to his historic birthplace memorial.”

Wat Aka, located in Khorum Subdistrict, Pichai District, Uttaradit Province, is a rural temple surrounded by tranquility, agricultural land, and the local way of life. While not a large temple with nationally recognized architectural features, it holds significant importance as a community religious site, serving as a spiritual center for the local people for centuries.

Pichai District plays a crucial role in Thai history from the late Ayutthaya period to the early Thonburi period, particularly in the story of Phraya Pichai Dab Hak, a key general during the reign of King Taksin the Great. Local records and legends mention battles against the Burmese army in Pichai, reflecting the area's role as a northern frontier town. However, while historical evidence doesn't officially confirm Wat Aka as a direct battlefield, the surrounding area is often linked to this historical event through geography, culture, and local narratives.

Within Wat Aka are basic religious structures such as the main chapel, a sermon hall, and Buddha images used by villagers for religious ceremonies. The temple plays a vital role in Buddhist activities, including religious holidays, merit-making ceremonies, and community rituals, reflecting the close relationship between the temple and the lives of the local people.

The temple is surrounded by a tranquil rural environment, ideal for spiritual relaxation and merit-making. Visitors often experience a simple, uncrowded atmosphere and can closely observe the traditional way of life of the community in Phichai District. Wat Eka is therefore a suitable place for those seeking religious and cultural tourism combined with learning about the historical context of Uttaradit Province.

How to Get There
