“A freshwater fish tunnel over 10 meters long that gives the feeling of walking under the Nong Han lake, and features displays of rare fish such as the Mekong giant catfish and the giant pangasius.”

The Sakon Nakhon Freshwater Fish Exhibition Center, often referred to as the "Sakon Nakhon Aquarium," stands as a premier landmark situated alongside the scenic Nong Han Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast Thailand. This facility serves far more than just a recreational aquarium; it functions as a vibrant educational hub under the supervision of the Sakon Nakhon Inland Fisheries Research and Development Center.

Upon entering the building, visitors are immersed in an underwater world that meticulously showcases the incredible biodiversity of the Mekong River Basin and the Nong Han ecosystem. The undisputed highlight is the impressive freshwater fish tunnel, where guests can walk beneath a massive tank, feeling as though they are exploring the depths of the lake itself. Within this tunnel, you are surrounded by the graceful movements of various aquatic species, ranging from significant commercial fish to rare giants, most notably the Mekong Giant Catfish—the world's largest freshwater fish—as well as the Great White Sheatfish, Ornate Spiny Eels, and the elegantly patterned Clown Featherback.

In addition to the main tunnel, the aquarium features numerous smaller and medium-sized displays that replicate natural habitats, allowing for the close observation of unique aquatic behaviors. Each exhibit provides insightful information about endangered indigenous species, aiming to foster environmental awareness and a spirit of conservation among youth and the general public. The interior is thoughtfully designed with atmospheric lighting that creates a captivating experience for children and serves as a stunning backdrop for photography enthusiasts. Furthermore, the surrounding grounds are beautifully landscaped, offering panoramic views of the vast Nong Han Lake, making it an ideal destination for families seeking both knowledge and relaxation while visiting Sakon Nakhon.

How to Get There
  • Located in Sakon Nakhon city, on the banks of Nong Han Lake. From the clock tower roundabout, take Sai Sawang Road towards Nong Han Lake, approximately 2 kilometers. There is ample parking available within the research center.

Travel Tips
  • Best time to visit: We recommend coming in the morning after opening hours. This allows you to comfortably stroll through the aquarium, admire the fish, and take photos in the aquarium tunnel without crowds.

  • Photography preparations: The aquarium uses carefully arranged lighting to enhance the beauty of the fish tanks. We recommend turning off flash when taking photos, as the flash will reflect off the glass, ruining the image. More importantly, it prevents the fish from being startled or harmed in the eyes.

  • Must-see spot: Besides the highlight aquarium tunnel, don't miss the display of the giant Mekong giant catfish, a rare sight elsewhere and an important native species of the Mekong River basin.

  • Connecting activities by Nong Han Lake: After visiting the aquarium, we recommend setting aside time to stroll along the adjacent Nong Han Lake. There are walking paths and resting spots with a very pleasant atmosphere, especially in the cool afternoon breeze.

  • Attire: As this is a semi-educational center and involves some walking, comfortable shoes are recommended. For striking photos, wear light-colored or white clothing to contrast with the blue and dark lighting inside the building.

  • Check opening days: Please remember that this aquarium is closed every Monday. On some public holidays, the area may be more crowded than usual. For group or school visits, please contact us in advance to arrange for a guide.

  • Cleanliness: Food and drinks are not permitted inside the facility to maintain the cleanliness of the aquariums and the simulated ecosystem. Please dispose of your trash in the designated areas outside the building.
