“Limestone canyons eroded by water, separated into two sides, along with a deep, serene emerald pool, and the ashes scattering site of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu amidst the mysterious rainforest. ”
Tang Nam is one of the prominent Unseen spots of Khao Sok National Park. It is formed by the erosion of the Khlong Sok River over time, causing a large limestone mountain to split apart, creating a narrow canyon with steep cliffs on both sides, beautifully surrounding the emerald green water.
The Wonder of Nature
A key highlight is the deep and tranquil pool that appears as if the water is still, hence the name "Tang Nam" (Still Water). The river flows through the narrow canyon below, amidst towering cliffs that are only partially illuminated by sunlight, creating dimensions of light and shadow that are both beautiful and awe-inspiring. It is also home to a large number of freshwater fish, resembling a natural fish sanctuary.
Ecosystem and the Headwaters of Khlong Sok
This area is considered one of the headwaters of Khlong Sok, which is vital to the surrounding ecosystem. It is surrounded by lush rainforest, filled with dense vegetation, wildlife, and natural sounds such as the calls of hornbills and rare animals, creating a refreshing and vibrant atmosphere along the way.
Spiritual Significance
In addition to its natural beauty, Tang Nam is also the ashes scattering site of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, a great Buddhist monk, making this area full of peace and faith. Around October 17-19 of each year, the "Khao Sok Remembrance Day of Buddhadasa's Ashes Scattering" event is held, where Buddhists come together to make merit and hike over 6 kilometers to perform the ceremony at this spot.
With its beauty that combines both magnificent nature and spiritual meaning, Tang Nam is a destination that offers impressions, tranquility, and a profound hiking experience in the forests of Khao Sok.
