“Limestone waterfall flows over emerald green moss-covered cliffs into clear pools. Peaceful and private atmosphere surrounded by lush rainforest. Perfect for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. ”
Than Sawan Waterfall is one of the waterfalls hidden in the rainforest of Khao Sok National Park, which is considered one of the oldest rainforest areas in the world. It has a geological age of more than 160 million years, making the ecosystem in this area extremely complex and abundant.
Geologically, this waterfall is formed by a small stream flowing through Limestone layers, which are water-soluble. This causes erosion, creating grooves, cavities, and stepped rock surfaces. The water flows in thin curtains rather than crashing straight down, resulting in a unique gentleness.
High humidity throughout the year (more than 80–90%) combined with limited sunlight filtering through the canopy allows the cliffs and boulders to become a breeding ground for numerous mosses, ferns, and Epiphytes, which are good indicators of the rainforest's ecological integrity.
The ecosystem around the waterfall is also home to various wildlife, such as hornbills, insectivorous birds, forest lizards, and amphibians, as well as diverse insect species that play an important role in the food chain.
The hiking trail to the waterfall is approximately 3–4 kilometers long, passing through both rainforest and small streams. Visitors will experience ecological changes from the forest floor to the humid areas near the waterfall, providing a true nature study experience.
In terms of tourism, Than Sawan Waterfall is ideal for hikers, photographers, and those who appreciate in-depth nature, especially long exposure photography, which can capture the beauty of the flowing water.
The best time to visit is late rainy season – early cool season (Oct. – Jan.) as the water volume is just right, the moss is lush green, and the atmosphere is at its best.
Than Sawan Waterfall is not just a tourist attraction, but also a place that reflects the balance of nature, ecosystems, and the beauty of the tropical rainforest in its entirety.
