“Explore sacred centuries-old iron pits, witness Thailand's finest legendary ancient metalwork, and worship the protective guardian shrine for auspicious blessings and good fortune.”

Bo Lek Nam Phi Archaeological Site is one of Thailand's most historically and archaeologically significant ancient iron ore sites. Located in Nam Phi Subdistrict, Thong Saen Khan District, Uttaradit Province, the area has long been renowned as a producer of "Nam Phi iron," a type of iron known for its hardness, toughness, and high flexibility. Locals believe it to be a sacred iron ore possessing protective powers, and it is traditionally used to create amulets, ceremonial knives, swords, and other auspicious objects. This belief in Nam Phi iron has been passed down through generations and has become an important part of Uttaradit Province's identity.

Archaeological evidence within the site reveals traces of ancient mining and iron smelting, including iron slag fragments, clay smelting furnaces, and numerous mining pits. This reflects the area's past as a major metallurgical center in the lower northern region. Many scholars believe that mining in this area may date back to the Sukhothai period or even earlier, as Nam Phi iron has been found used in the manufacture of weapons, agricultural tools, and metal utensils in several ancient northern communities. Currently, parts of the site are preserved as an archaeological site and serve as a learning center for traditional Thai iron smelting techniques.

Within the archaeological site, there are several ancient mining pits, but the most talked-about are "Boh Phra Saeng" (Royal Sword Pit) and "Boh Phra Khan" (Royal Dagger Pit), considered sacred by the local community. Locals believe that in the past, ore from Boh Phra Saeng was used to forge important royal swords for the king, while that from Boh Phra Khan was used to forge weapons for generals and high-ranking officials. Although these stories are folk beliefs without direct historical evidence, they reflect the cultural value and long-held faith people have in Nam Phi iron. Tourists often pay respects at the shrine of the Nam Phi Iron Pit deity located at the entrance for good fortune before entering the inner areas.

Another point of interest is the Nam Phi Iron Pit Museum, which showcases the history of this mining source, along with ancient mining equipment, iron smelting tools, swords, knives, and various products made from Nam Phi iron. The museum also features exhibitions on the traditional iron forging process, from ore mining and smelting to shaping into weapons and various items, helping tourists gain a deeper understanding of the community's blacksmithing wisdom. At certain times, there are demonstrations of knife making and iron smelting by local artisans, a key attraction that allows visitors to experience the traditional way of life of the Nam Phi community firsthand.

Beyond its historical value The ancient site of Bo Lek Nam Phi is also a cultural tourist attraction that clearly reflects the relationship between natural resources and the way of life of the local people. Many villagers in the area still work in blacksmithing and produce souvenirs from Nam Phi iron, such as Buddha images, amulets, knives, and various ornaments, which are popular among collectors and believers throughout the country. A trip to Bo Lek Nam Phi is therefore not just about viewing ancient ruins, but also an opportunity to learn about history, local craftsmanship, and traditional beliefs that have been passed down for hundreds of years by the people of Uttaradit.
