“Golden stalactites and stalagmites in the large Khamin limestone cave, with safe illuminated walkways. The 10-tiered Dadafa Waterfall with Nan Dadafa and Nan Sawan viewpoints. Learn about the Tai Rom Yen Operation amidst a thriving rainforest. ”

Tai Rom Yen National Park is situated in the Nakhon Si Thammarat mountain range, covering a highly fertile rainforest area. It serves as a vital watershed for the lower areas of Surat Thani Province. The terrain is complex and mountainous, featuring limestone cliffs, caves, and numerous natural streams.

Historical Background

The Khlong Nam Thao forest and Khao Chong Chang area were once a significant stronghold of the Communist Party of Thailand (CPT) since 1965. Due to the high mountainous terrain and difficult access, government control was limited in the past.

Significant events in the area include:
• 1977: Conflicts and operations in the forest area.
• 1979: Train robbery at Phru Phi Station.
• 1982: Bombing of the Surat Thani Provincial Hall.

Operation Tai Rom Yen

On February 18, 1982, Lt. Gen. Han, Commander of the 4th Army Region, launched "Tai Rom Yen" operation to end the influence of the CPT in the area. The situation was controlled within a short period, and the restoration of the forest and surrounding communities began.

Establishment of the National Park

After the area was pacified, the Royal Forest Department surveyed and declared it "Tai Rom Yen National Park" on December 11, 1987. Subsequently, a Royal Decree defined the area in 1991, totaling approximately 425 square kilometers (265,625 rai), making it the 73rd national park of Thailand.

Ecology & Biodiversity

This area is a highly fertile rainforest, composed of diverse tree species such as Dipterocarpus and Hopea odorata, as well as hill rainforest plants. It is a habitat for various wildlife species, including forest birds, small mammals, and rare animals in the southern ecosystem.

Khamin Cave

A large limestone cave of national significance, featuring multiple levels inside, with beautiful golden stalactites and stalagmites formed by the accumulation of calcite minerals over thousands of years. It has an illuminated lighting system and safe walkways. Numerous bats are found in some areas, and archaeological evidence reflects the use of the area in the past.

Dadafa Waterfall

A large 10-tiered waterfall cascading through high cliffs and rainforest, with each tier having a unique character. Highlights include Nan Dadafa and Nan Sawan, which are the most beautiful natural viewpoints of the waterfall. Suitable for both relaxation and nature study.
