“Witness the rare natural phenomenon of a golden-brown freshwater lagoon located just beside the sandy coastline of the Gulf of Thailand.”

Ban La Waeng Lagoon Beach is one of the most distinctive natural attractions in Pattani Province. What makes this place remarkable is the rare landscape where a freshwater lagoon and a seaside beach exist side by side, separated only by a line of coastal pine trees.

The freshwater lagoon, locally known as La Waeng Peat Swamp, is a large peatland ecosystem where the water appears light brown, resembling the color of brewed tea. This natural coloration comes from the accumulation and decomposition of leaves and organic materials within the peat forest.

The calm water surface reflects the silhouettes of the surrounding pine trees, creating a serene mirror-like view. Just a few meters away lies the bright sandy shoreline and the deep blue waters of the Gulf of Thailand, forming a striking contrast of colors and landscapes. This rare setting creates a fascinating natural scene often described as a “two-water sea” experience.

Ban La Waeng is also an important area for local biodiversity. The freshwater lagoon serves as a habitat for various freshwater fish species and local birds, while the nearby sea provides abundant coastal fisheries for surrounding communities.

Tourism development in the area focuses on maintaining harmony with nature. Simple resting pavilions by the lagoon and clean walking paths along the beach have been built to allow visitors to enjoy the scenery without disturbing the natural environment.

Today, the area has become a favorite leisure destination for local residents. Visitors often come here to enjoy family picnics, paddle boats on the freshwater lagoon, or simply relax while listening to the gentle sound of ocean waves carried by the sea breeze.

Beyond its natural beauty, Ban La Waeng also reflects the peaceful relationship between the local community and their natural resources. The lifestyle here remains simple and welcoming. Travelers may witness traditional fishing activities or villagers collecting natural resources from the surrounding peatland.

A visit to Ban La Waeng Lagoon Beach therefore offers more than a typical seaside experience. It allows visitors to slow down and appreciate the beauty of a rare ecosystem where freshwater and seawater landscapes coexist in perfect harmony, making this hidden destination feel like a natural oasis in the southernmost region of Thailand.

How to Get There
  • By Car: From Pattani city, take Highway No. 42 heading toward Sai Buri and Mai Kaen districts. Once entering Mai Kaen District, turn left toward Ban La Waeng village. Direction signs to the lagoon beach are clearly marked, and the paved road leads conveniently to both the lagoon and the beach.
  • By Public Transport: Take a van from Pattani to Narathiwat and get off at the Mai Kaen intersection. From there, continue by local motorcycle taxi to Ban La Waeng.

Travel Tips
  • The best time to visit is early morning to watch the sunrise over the sea, or during the evening when sunlight reflects beautifully on the lagoon surface.
  • Popular activities include photographing the mirror-like reflection of pine trees on the lagoon (Mirror Lake Effect), picnicking under the pine trees, and strolling along the quiet sandy beach.
  • Since food vendors are limited in the area, visitors are encouraged to bring picnic supplies and help preserve the natural environment by taking all trash back with them.
  • Nearby attractions include Wasukri Beach (Sai Buri District), Chulabhorn Development Project 6, and Pajo Waterfall in Narathiwat Province.
