“Known as the Virgin Forest, featuring thousands of fish in Macha Cave, panoramic views at Pha Phueng, beautiful waterfalls, and unique Tarzan-style cottages in nature.”

Khao Pu-Khao Ya National Park was officially designated as Thailand's 42nd national park on May 27, 1982. Spanning approximately 433,750 rai (694 square kilometers), it covers a vast territory intersecting the provinces of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Trang. The topography is largely defined by the rugged and intricate Banthat Mountain Range, with "Khao Pu" serving as the highest peak at approximately 850 meters above sea level. Geologically, the area is characterized by massive limestone mountains that have given rise to spectacular cave systems, interspersed with exceptionally pristine tropical rainforests. This dense vegetation has earned the park the title "The Virgin Forest," and it functions as a vital watershed for the Trang and Pak Phanang rivers.

In terms of biodiversity, this forest is a sanctuary for numerous rare and endangered wildlife species, including the Malayan tapir, serow, and barking deer, as well as various reptiles and amphibians native to southern Thailand's mountain ranges. For birdwatchers, the park is a critical habitat, home to over 150 species of forest birds, such as the white-crowned hornbill, Asian fairy-bluebird, and blue-naped sunbird. Beyond its ecological significance, the park is steeped in local folklore regarding "Ta Pu," a sacred spirit believed by local communities to protect the forest and its creatures. This blend of spiritual heritage and natural beauty gives the park a unique cultural identity that distinguishes it from other protected areas.

The park’s primary attractions include "Macha Cave" (Tham Matcha Pla Won), an expansive limestone cavern featuring a 300-meter walkway through stunning stalactites and stalagmites. A permanent stream flows through the cave, providing a home for thousands of "Pla Phol" or freshwater carp. Another ecological wonder is "Pha Phueng" (Bees Cliff), a towering white limestone cliff where, between February and April, hundreds of giant honeybee nests congregate in the rock crevices. Furthermore, nature trails lead visitors to the "Riang Thong Waterfall," which cascades down 13 levels from a high cliff. The journey to the falls is shaded by lush southern flora and dense fern groves, offering an immersive experience in one of Thailand’s most intact forest ecosystems.
