“Admire the hip-roof architecture blended with distinctive Branor art of the South. Learn about local wisdom through intricate Liphao weaving at the Arts and Crafts Center.”
Thaksin Ratchaniwet Palace began construction in 1973 on Tanyong Hill, a name derived from the Malay word meaning bullet wood tree. Its primary purpose was to serve as a royal residence for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and members of the royal family during their visits to work and meet residents in the southern border provinces. The site is not merely a residence but also a learning center that transformed acidic and waterlogged peat swamp land into a model of sustainable development.
The architectural structure reflects deep respect for local cultural traditions. The modern hip-roof reinforced concrete buildings are beautifully blended with carved wooden patterns inspired by Southern Thai and Malay Peninsula art. The palace grounds are surrounded by a rich coastal forest ecosystem, featuring native plants such as bullet wood trees and padauk trees that provide ample shade. The area also includes a bird park that conserves rare bird species found in Southern Thailand.
Additionally, the grounds house the Arts and Crafts Center, a birthplace of local wisdom where natural materials such as "Liphao vine", once considered a worthless weed, have been transformed into world-class woven handicrafts. The center also promotes artistic craftsmanship on fishing boats through the creation of miniature Kolae boats, ensuring that younger generations preserve the distinctive Kanok patterns and vibrant colors unique to Narathiwat. A visit to this palace offers an appreciation of both fine craftsmanship and the enduring legacy of royal benevolence deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.
