“Extremely rich biodiversity, considered among the best in the regionTop destination for hornbill watching (10 species found) Features giant Kapok trees and scenic nature route Highway 4062”

Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most pristine tropical rainforests in Thailand and Southeast Asia, covering over 270,725 rai. It lies along the Sankalakhiri Range, a natural border between Thailand and Malaysia. The terrain is highly mountainous, ranging from დაახლოებით 50 to 1,533 meters above sea level, creating diverse ecosystems from lowland rainforest to montane forest.

The sanctuary is divided into two separate sections: Hala Forest (in Yala) and Bala Forest (in Narathiwat). Bala is more accessible and commonly visited, with Highway 4062 running through the forest, allowing easy access to nature viewpoints without deep trekking.

Ecologically, Hala-Bala is classified as a tropical rainforest, receiving high annual rainfall (over 2,000–3,000 mm), with consistently high humidity and stable temperatures. This supports a multi-layered forest structure, from understory plants to towering trees such as dipterocarps and giant kapok trees.

The area is globally significant for its biodiversity, including:

  • Birds: A key habitat for hornbills, with up to 10 species recorded, such as the Rhinoceros Hornbill and Helmeted Hornbill
  • Mammals: Rare species like the siamang (large black gibbon), Malayan tapir, leopard, and occasionally wild elephants
  • Reptiles & Amphibians: Many endemic species due to the consistently humid environment
  • Flora: Rich tropical plant diversity, including palms, ferns, and wild orchids

Hala-Bala also serves as a crucial watershed, feeding major rivers such as the Sai Buri and Pattani Rivers, which support local communities in southern Thailand.

In terms of conservation, the sanctuary is managed by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, with strict access control in certain zones to protect fragile ecosystems.

For eco-tourism, Hala-Bala is ideal for birdwatching, wildlife photography, botanical study, and rainforest exploration—especially in Bala Forest. However, deeper forest areas remain restricted and require official permission and guided access.

With its exceptional biodiversity and rainforest landscape comparable to the Amazon, Hala-Bala truly deserves its nickname: the “Amazon of ASEAN.”
