“Explore one of the most complete Dvaravati urban layouts and marvel at the renowned “Chansen Beads” along with ancient artifacts beautifully displayed inside Phra Maha That Chedi Si Chansen.”

Chansen Ancient City is a living chapter of Nakhon Sawan’s history, reflecting the prosperity of early agricultural communities and regional trade networks in central Thailand.

Dvaravati Civilization Remains

Covering an area of over 300 rai, the ancient city is characterized by a rounded-rectangular plan encircled by broad moats, whose traces remain clearly visible today. The central area within the moats rises above the surrounding land and is known as “Khok Chansen,” demonstrating advanced urban planning and land management of the ancient community.

Chansen Museum

The museum is located on the lower level of Phra Maha That Chedi Si Chansen, an elegant stupa constructed in remembrance of Luang Pho Od (Phra Khru Nisai Chariyakun), the former abbot of Wat Chansen. Exhibits include artifacts unearthed from the ancient city, such as Roman-influenced terracotta oil lamps, clay figurines, seals, and metal ornaments, offering insight into daily life and beliefs of the past.

Highlight: “Chansen Beads”

A key attraction is the collection of colorful glass and stone beads with distinctive patterns, providing strong evidence that Chansen once served as a strategic trading hub connected to Indian civilization and other regions across Asia.

Spiritual Center and Living Community

Beyond its historical value, Wat Chansen remains a spiritual heart of the community. Visitors often pay respects to Phra Phuttha Siri Chansen, the principal Buddha image, while also experiencing local ways of life and preserved traditions that continue to thrive around the site.
