“Guilin-style limestone mountains, 300-million-year-old marine fossils, iconic caves, and millions of bats at sunset”

Tham Pha Tha Phon Non-Hunting Area covers approximately 1,775 rai and features dramatic limestone mountains rising up to 236 meters. Shaped by millions of years of erosion, the landscape is filled with steep cliffs, rugged formations, and numerous caves, earning it the nickname “Guilin of Thailand.”

This area was once an ancient sea over 300 million years ago (Permian period). Today, visitors can observe marine fossils such as bivalves and corals embedded in limestone layers, making it a significant geological site in Thailand.

Notable caves include Naresuan Cave, Ruea Cave, Pha Daeng Cave, and Lod Cave, some of which allow visitors to walk through the mountain to the other side. Inside, you’ll find beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, along with prehistoric hand paintings on rock shelters and ancient Japanese inscriptions carved on stones, believed to date back to World War II.

The surrounding area is rich in biodiversity, with native plants and wildlife such as serow and black giant squirrels. A major highlight is in the evening, when visitors can witness millions of bats streaming out of the caves, forming a spectacular ribbon across the sky.

Visitors can obtain information from park officials upon arrival. A flashlight is essential for cave exploration due to dark and slippery conditions. During the rainy season, some caves may be inaccessible due to flooding. For group visits or overnight stays, it is recommended to contact the office in advance.
