“Take photos of the group of old wooden houses that blend with nature, admire the beauty of the red maple leaves during the beginning of the year, and learn about the history of ideological conflict through the actual location”
Political and Military School is a site of immense historical significance within Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park. Between 1970 and 1982, this area served as the primary ideological and strategic stronghold for the Communist Party of Thailand. Taking advantage of the steep terrain and dense forests as a natural shield, the school was used to indoctrinate political beliefs and train guerrilla warfare tactics for members and students who fled to the forest following political conflicts in the city. The site consists of over 30 small wooden huts scattered under the shade of pine and evergreen forests, designed to blend perfectly with the woods to avoid aerial detection.
In those days, the area was organized systematically, much like a modern military academy. It included classrooms for political theory, weapon training grounds, a canteen, a field hospital, and living quarters for leaders. These remains reflect a lifestyle of extreme self-reliance amidst scarcity. Ingenious resource management, such as using water turbines to grind rice and constructing shelters that could withstand extreme cold and humidity, shows how this place was the heart of an ideology that once significantly shook Thai politics.
Today, its role has transformed from a battlefield of conflict into an invaluable open-air historical museum. It serves as a vital learning center for younger generations to study past divisions and the importance of peace. Beyond its history, it is now one of Phitsanulok's most beautiful landmarks, especially in January when the maple leaves surrounding the old wooden huts turn vibrant red and cover the rooftops, creating a stunning contrast between the solemn traces of the past and the gentle beauty of nature.
