“A historic wooden watermill powered by natural streams drives traditional rice pounders, once serving as the rice mill of the Communist Party, showcasing engineering ingenuity in a lush forest setting.”
The Watermill of Phu Hin Rong Kla is more than a simple wooden structure—it is a historical landmark and a symbol of ingenuity and survival during a turbulent political era in Thailand. Located within the national park, directly opposite the Political and Military School, it reflects the lifestyle of those who once lived deep in the forest.
The watermill was built after the events of October 6, 1976, by engineering students from Chulalongkorn University who fled into the forest and joined the Communist Party of Thailand. It was designed to solve a critical problem—food production—by serving as a central rice mill for thousands of people living in the area.
Nature-Powered Mechanism:
This structure demonstrates a brilliant application of hydropower. Water from a nearby stream or small waterfall turns a large wooden wheel, generating mechanical energy that is transferred through a shaft to operate multiple traditional wooden rice pounders simultaneously. This system significantly reduced manual labor and required no external fuel, making it highly efficient and sustainable.
A Legacy in the Mist:
Today, the watermill is preserved as an important historical and educational site, representing both political history and engineering wisdom. The aged wooden structure is now covered with lush green moss and ferns, nourished by the humid forest environment.
Surrounded by the soothing sound of flowing water and dense greenery, the site offers a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can experience both natural beauty and deep historical significance in one place.
