“Pay respects to the three sacred city pillars housed in a single shrine and admire the elegant Thai-contemporary architecture in the heart of Lampang—a place where prosperity and history converge”
Lampang City Pillar Shrine is a highly significant sacred landmark and the spiritual heart of the city. Located in front of the old Lampang Provincial Hall, it possesses a unique feature that sets it apart from other provinces it houses three city pillars within a single pavilion. The first pillar was erected around 1774 during the reign of Chao Fa Chai Kaeo, followed by the second in 1791, and the third during the time of Chao Boonyawat Wongmanit, the last ruler of Lampang. Having multiple pillars reflects the city's expansion and the succession of power throughout different eras. In 1897, all three pillars were consolidated into their current location to serve as a unified center of faith for all Lampang residents.
The current architecture is an elegant four-sided pavilion that harmoniously blends Central Thai and Lanna artistic styles. The interior is exquisitely decorated with golden Thai patterns contrasting against clean, bright walls. Each city pillar is crafted from auspicious Chaiyaphruek wood (Javanese Cassia) and has undergone Brahmin rituals according to ancient royal traditions. Beyond its religious importance, the surrounding area connects to other historical sites such as Museum Lampang and Wat Boonyawat Wihan, making this location the true heart of the old city that vividly tells stories from the past to the present.
In addition to its architectural splendor, the shrine is located near the Clock Tower, the iconic symbol of Lampang, making it very accessible. The surrounding area is spacious and clean, featuring organized gardens and parking lots to welcome tourists. Locals often visit to pray for career success, business prosperity, and protection from harm. Inside the shrine, staff members are available to guide newcomers through the correct worship steps, ensuring a worry-free experience. Furthermore, grand celebrations are held during major festivals, featuring free traditional cultural performances for the public. It is a perfect starting point for any journey, offering both peace of mind and smiles to every visitor.
Visiting the Lampang City Pillar Shrine is not only about seeking blessings and good fortune for a smooth life but also an opportunity to appreciate the architecture that reflects the past glory of the Lampang Kingdom. At night, the municipality illuminates the shrine with beautiful lights, turning it into a serene and mystical photography spot in the middle of the business district. This is a must-visit city landmark that no traveler should miss.
