“Admire the unique elephant-shaped wooden house, an unusual structure built entirely from wood, explore distinctive elephant sculptures carved from natural tree roots, and learn the philosophy of traditional craftsmanship from Kru Kham Ai Dechduangta, the artist preserving Lanna folk art.”

Ban Chang Luang, also known as the Ngao Community Art Center, is not only a museum but also the home and spiritual workspace of Kru Kham Ai Dechduangta, a master woodcarver who has dedicated his life to preserving traditional Lanna craftsmanship. He transformed his own home into a learning space and exhibition area that showcases the wood carving works he has created throughout his lifetime.

Architecture and Artistic Works

One of the most remarkable highlights is the large elephant-shaped wooden house, an architectural masterpiece combining structural design with intricate wood carving. Inside the compound, visitors can discover numerous carvings reflecting local lifestyle, beliefs, and Buddhist philosophy.

Kru Kham Ai’s works are especially recognized for their organic form, where the natural shapes of tree roots and wood remnants are skillfully integrated with carving techniques. This approach allows each sculpture to retain the natural character of the wood while becoming a vivid artistic creation.

A Living Community Art School

Ban Chang Luang also serves as a community art learning center, welcoming visitors and art enthusiasts who wish to learn about traditional wood carving. Travelers can experience the authentic atmosphere of a working workshop—hearing the sound of chisels striking wood and witnessing the dedication behind preserving the beauty of Lanna artistic heritage within the peaceful environment of Ngao District.
