“Wat Akkho Chai Khiri is famous for the rare inverted pagoda shadow phenomenon inside an ancient wooden viharn, a beautiful golden Lanna-style stupa on the hilltop, and a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Wang River and the scenic Jaehom countryside.”

Wat Akkho Chai Khiri is an ancient temple that has long been a spiritual center for the people of Jaehom. The temple sits on a hill locally known as “Mon Kai Khia”, which historically served as an important strategic point of Wi Chet Nakhon, the former name of Chae Hom.

The Inverted Pagoda Shadow

The most fascinating attraction of the temple is the “inverted pagoda shadow” phenomenon found inside the old wooden viharn. When sunlight passes through a tiny opening in the window, it creates a natural pinhole camera effect, projecting the image of the pagoda upside down onto the floor or cloth inside the dark hall.

This rare optical phenomenon is considered one of the Unseen attractions of Lampang, and the hilltop location makes the experience even more special, offering a quiet and mystical atmosphere while observing the natural light projection.

Million-Dollar Viewpoint

Besides paying respect to the golden Lanna-style stupa and the replica Buddha footprint, visitors can also enjoy one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Chae Hom District. From the temple courtyard, travelers can admire the Wang River winding through rice fields and local villages, with layers of mountains forming a stunning natural backdrop.

The peaceful scenery reflects the charm of northern Thai countryside life, making the temple a perfect destination for both spiritual visits and scenic relaxation.

How to Get There
  • By Car: From Lampang city, take Highway 1035 (Lampang – Chae Hom Road) for about 50 kilometers. Once you reach Chae Hom district, follow the signs to the temple on the left side. Visitors can either drive up to the parking area near the temple or park at the base and walk up 227 Naga staircase steps to enjoy the surrounding nature.

Travel Tips
  • The inverted pagoda shadow appears clearly when sunlight is strong, especially between 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

  • Walking up the staircase allows visitors to enjoy the peaceful forest surroundings and fresh air.

  • As it is a sacred temple, visitors should wear modest clothing.

  • The temple courtyard offers a panoramic view of the Wang River curve and Jaehom countryside.

  • Combine your trip with a visit to Wat Phra Phutthabat Pu Pha Daeng (Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat), located about 20–30 minutes away.
