“Historically significant as the private residence of King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) and several succeeding monarchs. It is characterized by its elegant Spanish-Italian architecture set gracefully by the sea.”
Klai Kangwon Palace was constructed in 1926 (B.E. 2469) upon the royal initiative of King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) to serve as a summer retreat. The name "Klai Kangwon" signifies a quest for peace and privacy, away from the complexities of state affairs. The Palace is located on the beachfront on the northern side of Hua Hin, facing the Gulf of Thailand. Its design and landscaping emphasize simplicity yet grandeur, blending harmoniously with nature. Currently, it remains a Royal Residence Area used by the King and members of the Royal Family.
The main architecture of Klai Kangwon Palace is distinguished by its Spanish and Italian architectural style, which was popular during that era. The primary buildings of the Palace complex include 3 important royal residences, listed by their significance and auspicious names:
-
Phra Tamnak Piamsuk: The main residence and the place of abode for the King.
-
Phra Tamnak Noi: The residence of Queen Rambhai Barni, the Queen Consort of King Rama VII.
-
Phra Tamnak Pluk Kasem: Used as accommodation for other royal family members and retainers. The names of each of these royal residences carry highly auspicious meanings, signifying happiness and abundance. The area around the Royal Residence is beautifully landscaped with gardens and green spaces, reflecting the royal preference for simplicity and nature. Although not open to public entry, the long boundary wall stretching along the road demonstrates the dignity and historical importance of this location.
As Klai Kangwon Palace is an active Royal Residence Area, there are no activities for general tourists inside the grounds. However, interested visitors can drive or walk along the outside perimeter fence to observe the architecture and the tranquil atmosphere. The ambiance surrounding the Palace is quiet and orderly, which contrasts with other tourist areas in Hua Hin. The area in front of the Palace is often a place of public respect and is known for the pleasant shade provided by large trees lining the roadside.
The Palace is interesting for architectural photographers or those interested in history who wish to capture the exterior buildings and walls reflecting the Renaissance-era style. The surrounding area along the perimeter is sometimes used as a backdrop for photography requiring elegance and order. Klai Kangwon Beach, located near the Palace, is a quieter beach suitable for tourists seeking relaxation in a more private setting. Although not open for interior visits, it remains an important landmark worthy of recognition when visiting Hua Hin.
We invite all visitors to view the elegance of Klai Kangwon Palace from the exterior, to commemorate its long history and appreciate the deep meaning of being "far from worries," a place chosen by the Thai King.
