“Pay homage to Luang Phor Thammachak, a unique Buddha image with the Wheel of Dhamma on its right palm, and climb 565 steps to the summit for the most stunning panoramic views of the Chao Phraya River.”

Thammamul Worawihan Temple is a third-class royal monastery of the Worawihan rank with a history dating back to the early Ayutthaya period. The temple stands prominently on the slope of Thammamun Hill along the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River. Its elevated location offers sweeping views of Thailand’s main river and enhances the temple’s serene and majestic atmosphere.

The importance of Thammamul Temple is recorded in the royal writings of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). The temple was also historically associated with the collection of sacred water from a holy pond atop the hill, which was used in the royal oath-taking ceremony known as the “Phiphat Sattaya” ritual in various eras. This royal connection has imbued the temple with a deep sense of historical significance and spiritual reverence for generations.

The spiritual heart of the temple is “Luang Pho Thammachak,” a standing bronze Buddha image in the gesture of pacifying relatives (prohibiting quarrels). What makes this image unique is the depiction of the Dharmachakra (Wheel of Dharma) at the center of the raised right palm, symbolizing the turning of the Wheel of the Law in Buddhist teachings. Scholars believe the image reflects a blend of late Chiang Saen, Sukhothai, and Ayutthaya artistic styles, demonstrating a rich fusion of cultural influences. Devotees believe that applying gold leaf and offering prayers to Luang Pho Thammachak brings protection, success, and prosperity.

For visitors who enjoy light hiking and scenic views, climbing the 565-step Naga staircase to the hilltop is a rewarding experience. The pathway is shaded by lush trees and fresh air throughout the ascent. At the summit, visitors will find the Viharn of Luang Pho Nak and a panoramic viewpoint overlooking green rice fields and the winding Chao Phraya River. The peaceful and breezy atmosphere at the top makes it an ideal place for relaxation and meditation.

Beyond its religious significance, the riverside area in front of the temple features a local riverside market and the well-known “hanging-legs noodle” restaurants, popular among families and tourists. Visitors can enjoy local dishes while admiring river views and feeding fish, experiencing the simple yet charming riverside lifestyle. This blend of spirituality, culture, and leisure makes Thammamul Temple a well-rounded destination.

Thammamul Worawihan Temple is therefore more than an ancient temple; it is a harmonious symbol of faith, history, and natural beauty. Visitors are warmly invited to pay homage to Luang Pho Thammachak and take in the breathtaking scenery above the curve of the Chao Phraya River for blessings and unforgettable memories.
