“Khao Ngern Cave is an important historical site featuring the royal monogram of King Rama V inscribed inside the cave.”
Khao Ngern Cave is located within the same area as Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Park, Chumphon, and is part of Wat Tham Khao Ngern, an ancient temple founded around 1757 BE (circa 2300 BE). Originally, it was called "Wat Tham Khao En" before being renamed "Wat Tham Khao Ngern."
The cave’s historical significance comes from the visit of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1892 CE (R.S. 108 / B.E. 2432), when he traveled by boat along the Langsuan River and entered the cave. Inside, the royal monogram inscriptions remain, allowing later generations to witness this valuable historical evidence.
In front of the cave is a stupa, added to the original structure, providing a serene spot for visitors to pay respects. The cave is situated on a limestone hill, offering cool, shaded surroundings, making it part of a pilgrimage route and natural tourist site in Chumphon.
Visitors can explore Khao Ngern Cave together with Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Park in a single trip, experiencing both natural tranquility and historical significance, while learning about King Rama V’s royal visit.
