“Explore 8 magnificent cave chambers stretching over 500 meters, admire dazzling formations in the Emerald Chamber and Naga Chamber, and pay respects to the revered Mara-Vijaya Buddha image in a peaceful, naturally cool atmosphere year-round.”
Tham Luang Pha Wiang, locally known simply as “Tham Luang,” is one of Lamphun’s most impressive limestone caves. In the northern dialect, the word “Luang” means “large,” reflecting the cave’s grand scale. Located on Doi Tham Luang in Ban Pha Wiang, the cave extends approximately 500 meters and features a complex layout of 8 main chambers, each uniquely beautiful.
Notable chambers include:
-
Lan Rommanee Chamber – A spacious hall where natural light from the cave entrance reflects off shimmering formations.
-
Akkhanee Rock Chamber – Characterized by collapsed stalactites and stalagmites forming dramatic rock piles.
-
Noen Hin Sai Ngam Ta Chamber – A gently elevated area of soil and stone formations.
-
Emerald Chamber – Famous for its glittering mineral surfaces.
-
Naga Chamber – Featuring elongated formations resembling the mythical serpent.
Some connecting passages are slightly narrow or require bending down briefly, adding a light sense of adventure while remaining accessible to general visitors.
A Spiritual Sanctuary
At the cave entrance stands Wat Tham Luang Pha Wiang, making the site both a natural attraction and a spiritual center. Inside the main chamber, several Buddha images are enshrined, most notably the revered Mara-Vijaya (Subduing Mara) Buddha.
The cave maintains a cool temperature and calm atmosphere throughout the year, making it ideal for meditation and quiet reflection. During important Buddhist festivals, especially Visakha Bucha Day, local residents gather here for religious ceremonies, reflecting the deep connection between the community and the cave.
Scenic Surroundings
Visitors reach the cave via a staircase surrounded by lush forest. From the entrance, panoramic views of Ban Hong district’s fields and mountain ranges unfold beautifully, making the climb well worth the effort.
