“San Phra Suea Mueang has a Mon-style tiled roof without chofah, stucco floral pediments with porcelain, and a metal Buddha in Maravijaya posture.”

San Phra Suea Mueang is a sacred city shrine of Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province, believed to date back to the establishment of the town during the reign of King Rama II, when communities were relocated from Thonburi to the lower Chao Phraya River area. The shrine is based on the traditional belief that every city must have a guardian spirit to protect it, ensuring peace, safety from disasters, and the well-being of local people. “Phra Suea Mueang” does not refer to clothing, but to a protective spirit or deity that safeguards the city, a concept shared in Thai, Brahmanic, and Mon cultural traditions.

Originally, the shrine was located within Pom Phlaeng Fai Fa, an important strategic military site used for naval defense and ceremonies such as military oaths and ritual blessings before missions.Over time, as the fortress area deteriorated, the original shrine was damaged. The local community then restored the sacred image and relocated it to a new shrine building, allowing people easier access for worship.

Today, San Phra Suea Mueang remains a spiritual center for the people of Phra Pradaeng, especially the Thai-Mon community, and plays an important role in the annual Songkran festival, reflecting the area’s cultural identity and living heritage.
