“Admire the "Great Vihara" with its unique blend of Thai and European architectural styles, and visit the "Gunpowder Building," which reflects the golden era of diplomacy between Siam and the West.”

Sao Thong Thong Temple is a third-class royal temple of the common type and is one of the most historically significant temples in Lopburi Province. It is located to the north of the walls of King Narai’s Palace. In the past, during the reign of King Narai the Great, this area was used as a residence for foreign diplomatic missions, particularly envoys from France and Persia who traveled to establish diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. As a result of Lopburi’s role as an important center of international contact during that period, Wat Sa Thong Thong features architectural characteristics that are distinct from typical Thai temples.

One of the highlights that visitors should not miss is the Royal Viharn, a large structure distinguished by its pointed arched doors and windows in the Gothic style of European architecture, while still retaining the traditional Thai roof structure and overall form in a harmonious blend. Inside the viharn is enshrined Luang Pho To, a large stucco Buddha image in the posture of Subduing Mara. With its graceful features and expression of compassion, the image has long been a revered spiritual center for the people of Lopburi.

Within the temple grounds, another notable historical structure is the Tuek Khasan, also known as the Gunpowder Building. It is believed to have served as a residence for foreign envoys or volunteer soldiers during the reign of King Narai the Great. The building reflects a blend of Western architectural influence and local Thai construction materials. Today, the structure remains in relatively good condition, serving as valuable historical evidence for the study of relations between Siam and foreign nations in the past.

The overall atmosphere of Sao Thong Thong Temple is solemn and peaceful, despite its close proximity to markets and residential areas in the old town. The temple is well maintained and features beautifully designed structures such as a twelve-cornered chedi, an ordination hall, and other religious buildings. Walking through the temple allows visitors to feel as though they are stepping back in time to an era when Lopburi served as the second royal capital of Siam and flourished as a hub of cultural exchange with foreign nations.

For visitors exploring King Narai’s Palace, Sao Thong Thong Temple is an ideal nearby attraction that can easily be reached on foot. It offers a unique perspective on Buddhist faith existing alongside an ancient royal complex. The temple is well suited for worship, historical learning, and photography, showcasing architectural features that are rarely found in typical Thai temples.
