“Stand in awe of the uniquely shaped pagoda that rises high above the landscape, while enjoying the tranquil riverside atmosphere of this ancient temple site.”

Mani Chonlakhan Temple is an ancient temple located on a small island in the Lopburi River, near the base of a bridge crossing the river. Surrounded by flowing water, the temple offers a peaceful and shaded atmosphere that sets it apart from other urban temples. For generations, Wat Maneechonlakhan has served as an important spiritual and cultural center for the riverside community of Lopburi.

The most distinctive landmark of the temple is the Maneechonlakhan Chedi, a tall, multi-tiered square-shaped pagoda that rises sharply upward. Its unique form differs greatly from the bell-shaped or circular chedis commonly found in Thailand. The chedi is believed to have been constructed during the reign of King Rama IV by Phra Upatchaya Saeng, also known as Luang Pho Saeng, a highly revered monk and spiritual master of the past. As a result, the chedi stands not only as an architectural symbol but also as a powerful focus of local faith and devotion.

The temple’s architectural elements reflect early Rattanakosin art, characterized by elegance, simplicity, and well-preserved craftsmanship. Inside the main hall is enshrined a Naga-Protected Buddha image, admired for its graceful features and sacred presence. Within the temple grounds also stands a large Bodhi tree planted by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), symbolizing royal benevolence and the long-standing bond between the Thai monarchy and the local community.

The overall atmosphere of Mani Chonlakhan Temple is tranquil and refreshing, making it an ideal place for merit-making, meditation, and quiet reflection. Situated beside the Lopburi River, the temple enjoys cool breezes throughout the day. Visitors can admire the fine stucco details adorning the chedi, pay respects and seek blessings from the statue of Luang Pho Saeng, and enjoy scenic views of the river flowing through the heart of Lopburi.

This temple can be regarded as a hidden gem along the river, attracting photographers and architecture enthusiasts alike. The soaring chedi, set against a backdrop of open sky and water, creates a striking and memorable scene. When sunlight falls upon the structure, the layered patterns and forms become more pronounced, resulting in an image that is both visually beautiful and spiritually evocative.

Visitors are warmly invited to experience the atmosphere of faith, appreciate the distinctive beauty of Buddhist art, and embrace the serenity offered by the flowing river at Mani Chonlakhan Temple, one of Lopburi Province’s most valuable cultural heritage sites.
