“Admire the "Five-Spired Castle-Style Bell Tower" and the "Ancient Monk Bathing Rail," unique cultural heritages. Pay respects to the sacred sandstone Naga-prok Buddha image in the Lopburi style.”

Tong Pu Temple is an ancient temple of great historical significance in Lopburi. The name “Tong Pu” is believed to originate from the Mon language, meaning “a gathering place for troops” or a site where armies assembled before going into battle. This reflects the historical role of the area in military activities and city defense. The temple also served as a spiritual center for Mon communities who migrated and settled in Siam. A major restoration took place during the reign of King Narai the Great, resulting in architectural and artistic features that harmoniously blend Thai, Mon, and Lao influences.

The main structures within the temple include the ordination hall and the viharn, both featuring architectural characteristics known as the “lowered lotus base with a sagging belly,” resembling the curved hull of a boat. This style was popular during the late Ayutthaya period and reflects the craftsmanship and aesthetic refinement of ancient Thai builders. Inside the viharn is enshrined a sandstone Naga-Protected Buddha image from the Lopburi period, dating to around the 19th Buddhist century. The statue is notable for its strong yet graceful form and its profound spiritual presence.

One of the most remarkable highlights of Tong Pu Temple is the bell tower, designed in the form of a five-spired prang-like structure, a rare architectural style rarely seen today. This structure reflects the former importance of the temple. Another significant feature is the ancient wooden bathing trough, or “song nam trough,” intricately carved from wood and traditionally used in the Buddha bathing ritual during the Songkran Festival. The temple has preserved this artifact in excellent condition.

Within the temple grounds, visitors can also find other valuable antiquities and artistic elements, such as an ancient wooden Tripitaka hall and gilded lacquer decorations on the viharn doors. These details demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship in the past and reflect the religious and cultural prosperity of Lopburi during a significant period in history.

For those seeking tranquility and possessing a passion for archaeology, Tong Pu Temple is an ideal destination. Located away from the bustling main tourist areas, the temple offers a peaceful and shaded atmosphere, perfect for exploring the intricate artistic details hidden throughout the grounds. Visiting Tong Pu Temple feels like stepping back in time, allowing visitors to connect with the stories of ancient warriors, Mon communities, and devoted Buddhists whose legacy remains deeply embedded in this sacred place.
