“Pay respects to "Luang Pho Phra Ngam," a majestic large white Buddha image in the Subduing Mara posture on the hillside, and explore the "Earthen Ubosot," an eco-friendly architectural masterpiece emphasizing simplicity.”
Siri Chanthara Nimit Worawihan Temple or Khao Phra Ngam Temple, commonly known as Wat Khao Phra Ngam, is a third-class royal monastery and one of the most significant temples in Lopburi Province. The temple is located at the foot of Khao Phra Ngam hill in Khao Phra Ngam Subdistrict. It was originally an abandoned ancient temple until 1912, when Phra Ubali Kunupamajarn (Chan Sirijanto), the former abbot of Wat Boromniwas, encountered the site during his pilgrimage. Recognizing its spiritual potential, he restored and developed the area into a serene and beautiful Buddhist sanctuary that continues to serve as a spiritual center for the people of Lopburi today.
The most prominent landmark of the temple is Phra Phuttha Patipak Makkathayok, widely known as Luang Pho Phra Ngam, a massive white stucco Buddha image enshrined on the hillside. The statue measures approximately 11 meters across the lap and 18 meters in height_. Its gentle and compassionate facial expression truly lives up to the name “Phra Ngam,” meaning “the beautiful Buddha,” and it is regarded as one of the most graceful Buddha images in Lopburi. Within the temple grounds, visitors can also pay respect to a Reclining Buddha and a replica of the Buddha’s footprint, which are important objects of devotion.
The atmosphere of the temple is lush, orderly, and tranquil. The temple grounds are well maintained, with walkways and staircases leading up to Luang Pho Phra Ngam on the hill. From the summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Khao Phra Ngam Subdistrict and the surrounding landscape. Another highlight is the Sirijanto Museum, which displays monastic utensils, historical records, and the life story of Luang Pu Chan Sirijanto, a highly revered monk among the local community.
For those who seek peace, natural surroundings, and Buddhist architecture, Khao Phra Ngam Temple offers more than just a monumental Buddha image. Its halls, pathways, and landscape are thoughtfully designed to blend with the hilly terrain, making a visit feel like a gentle forest walk infused with spiritual energy. It is an ideal place to restore both body and mind through calm reflection and devotion.
