“The Double-layered Earthen Wall, which was specially strengthened on the western side, and the Reconstructed City Gate standing prominently on Malai Maen Road—a historical symbol of a vital frontier town.”

The Ancient City Wall and City Gate of Suphan Buri are important historical remains that reflect the prosperity of Suphan Buri as a strategic frontier city since the Ayutthaya period. The old city is located in Rua Yai Subdistrict on the western bank of the Suphan Buri River (Tha Chin River). Its city layout was rectangular in shape, measuring approximately 3,600 by 920 meters. In the past, a river flowed through the center of the city, which led to it being known as “Muang Ok Taek,” or “the split-chest city.”

At present, sections of the earthen city walls and moats can still be clearly seen, especially on the western side where the walls were constructed in two layers to strengthen the city’s defenses. An outer moat and an inner earthen embankment extend continuously for more than 3.5 kilometers. The eastern wall was mostly dismantled during the reign of King Maha Chakkraphat to prevent enemies from using it as a stronghold if the city were captured. The city gate seen today is a reconstructed structure built by the Fine Arts Department at the site believed to be the original gate, serving as a memorial and landmark for future generations.

The area surrounding the ancient city wall has been well maintained and is located near important sites such as the City Pillar Shrine and Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan. Visitors can drive through the area or walk along the long stretches of layered earth, which are considered valuable cultural heritage reflecting ancient wisdom in city planning and military defense.

For those interested in history and archaeology, visiting the old city wall helps reveal the connection between the famous Thai epic “Khun Chang Khun Phaen” and real locations, as this area was once believed to be the home of Khun Chang. A visit here is therefore not merely about viewing ancient structures, but about experiencing the roots and spirit of the people of Suphan Buri.

Visitors are invited to stop for photographs at the graceful city gate and walk along the ancient earthen walls, where you may feel as though you have stepped back in time to an era when Suphan Buri stood proudly as a formidable fortress of the Thai kingdom.
