“Discover the most complete Stone Wheel of Law (Dharmachakra) with its pillar and base in Thailand. Marvel at a collection of ancient beads and Dvaravati gold art, and learn about ethnic lifestyles through the Lao Song traditional house model.”

U Thong National Museum is one of Thailand’s most important institutions for preserving and exhibiting historical and archaeological evidence, particularly related to the Dvaravati civilization, which flourished between the 6th and 11th centuries. U Thong was once a major ancient city that served as both a capital and an international trading port, maintaining connections with regions such as India, China, and the Western world. As a result, the museum serves as a gateway to understanding the period before the emergence of later Thai kingdoms.

The most outstanding attraction for visitors is Exhibition Hall 1, which displays archaeological artifacts excavated from the ancient city of U Thong. A major highlight is the stone Dharmachakra, intricately carved from sandstone and discovered with its original pillar and base, considered one of the most complete and finest examples in Thailand. The hall also features Dvaravati-style Buddha images characterized by serene expressions and graceful forms, clearly reflecting the prosperity of Buddhism during that era.

Another fascinating collection includes ancient beads in various colors and patterns, demonstrating advanced craftsmanship and long-distance trade networks in ancient times. In addition, gold ornaments and precious objects unearthed from ancient stupas reveal important information about social status, beliefs, and religious practices of the Dvaravati people.

Beyond the indoor exhibitions, the museum grounds feature an outdoor exhibition area displaying traditional houses of the Thai Song Dam (Lao Song) ethnic group, a community with a strong cultural presence in the U Thong area. These displays provide insight into traditional lifestyles, clothing, and customs that have been preserved over generations. The museum environment is well-organized and modern, with clear and accessible information panels in both Thai and English.

The U Thong National Museum is an ideal destination for students, scholars, and travelers interested in history and archaeology. Viewing artifacts that have survived for hundreds or even thousands of years allows visitors to clearly envision the former glory of the Suvarnabhumi region and makes the museum an excellent starting point before exploring the actual archaeological sites surrounding the ancient city of U Thong.
