“Admire the beauty of Late Ayutthaya period architecture, witness a classic riverside lifestyle, and enjoy local delicacies connected to famous waterborne attractions.”

Samphanthawong Saram Worawihan Temple, commonly known as Koh Temple, is an ancient temple dating back to the Ayutthaya period. Originally, it was surrounded by natural canals connected to the Chao Phraya River, creating an appearance of an island in the water, which led to its popular name. Later, during the reign of King Rama I, it was extensively restored and established as a royal temple, marking a significant beginning for Buddhist art foundations in the Phra Nakhon district.

The standout feature of this temple is its three-story ordination hall, rebuilt to replace the original deteriorating structure. The top floor houses the main Buddha image named Phra Phuttha Mongkhon Sakdit, a magnificent gold-leafed clay Buddha that radiates faith and spiritual power. Additionally, there is a chapel dedicated to Mae Boonruean Tongboonterm, a renowned lay Buddhist practitioner whose spiritual legacy continues to draw many visitors seeking blessings and peace.

The temple serves as a gallery of artistic evolution, showcasing intricate stucco patterns and interior decorations that emphasize a bright, airy atmosphere while maintaining a deep sense of sanctity. The internal environment offers a surprising meditative silence, despite being situated just steps away from the chaotic energy of Sampheng and Chinatown, making it a perfect spiritual sanctuary for those looking to escape the city's noise for reflection or architectural appreciation.

For photographers and artists, Wat Koh offers a wealth of visual inspiration, from the play of light and shadow on modern structures to the weathered brickwork that speaks of centuries past. The stark contrast between the vibrant street life of the surrounding community and the stillness within the temple grounds provides a compelling narrative of the coexistence of Bangkok's past and present, making it an ideal spot for street photography and urban sketching.

We invite everyone to experience the unique charm of Koh Temple, to immerse yourself in its cultural richness, and to receive a sense of auspiciousness while exploring one of Bangkok’s most historic and living neighborhoods.
