“Explore the sacred pool where King Naresuan performed a royal hair-washing ritual after defeating enemies, a historic event that gave birth to the temple's name and the district's name, Chaiyo.”

Sa Ket Temple is an ancient community temple with a long history, believed to have been established before the Ayutthaya period around 1349 AD. Formerly known as Wat Sao Thong Hin, the temple is located on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River. In the past, this area held great strategic importance as a key transportation route and military passage. The temple has preserved the beauty of traditional riverside architecture characteristic of old Ang Thong town, surrounded by a peaceful and lush environment.

According to Thai chronicles, during the reigns of King Naresuan the Great and King Ekathotsarot, royal troops were mobilized to confront enemy forces at Ban Chawai and achieved a decisive victory. After the battle, the soldiers joyfully shouted “Chaiyo” in celebration. King Naresuan the Great then rested his army at this location and performed a royal ablution, washing his face and hair at the temple. As a result, the temple was renamed “Wat Sa Ket” to commemorate this significant historical event.

Within the temple grounds are important ancient structures and architectural features that have been carefully preserved, including the ordination hall and vihara housing sacred Buddha images for worship. There is also a memorial dedicated to King Naresuan the Great, allowing visitors to pay their respects and express gratitude for his legacy. The ancient pond, which serves as the origin of this important historical legend, further reflects the temple’s role as a witness to key moments in Thai history.

Sa Ket Temple is an ideal destination for those interested in studying history and experiencing tranquility. The temple provides informative signage and historical displays to educate visitors. The gentle river breeze from the Chao Phraya River creates a relaxing atmosphere and reflects the deep-rooted connection between the people of Ang Thong, the river, and the Thai monarchy that has endured for many centuries.

Visitors are warmly invited to explore and seek blessings at this Temple of Victory, enjoy the scenic views along the Chao Phraya River, and immerse themselves in the timeless spiritual aura of the past at Sa Ket Temple.
