“Home to Prachuap Khiri Khan’s historic City Pillar Shrine A major spiritual center for local residents Beautiful Thai-style ordination hall and peaceful temple grounds Hosts traditional ceremonies throughout the year Conveniently located in the city center, near government offices and attractions”

Wat Ko Lak Temple is considered one of the oldest spiritual and historical centers of Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Oral history suggests the temple began as a small monastery (Samnak Song) during the late Ayutthaya period, estimated to be around 2300 B.E. (c. 1757 AD), with Luang Pho Joi, a traveling monk, credited as one of the early founders. The name "Wat Ko Lak" originates from its location near Ko Lak Bay.

Key Historical Milestones:

Early Founding (c. 1757 AD): The site was established as a monastic dwelling near the bay that would later give the temple its name.

Official Establishment (1916 AD): It was officially recognized as a "Wat" (Buddhist Temple) in 1916 AD (B.E. 2459).

The Oath of Allegiance: In historical times, Wat Ko Lak served as a critical location for local officials to perform the solemn Oath of Allegiance Ceremony (Thue Nam Phiphat Satthaya), demonstrating its significant role in the local governance and spiritual life of the city.

Royal Status (1972 AD): In 1972 AD (B.E. 2515), Wat Ko Lak was royally elevated to the status of a Third-Class Royal Temple, General Type (Phra Aram Luang Chan Tri, Chan Saman), a high honor that solidified its position as a central institution of the province.

Luang Pho Piam: The temple is strongly associated with Phra Sumethee Worakun (Luang Pho Piam Chanthachoto), a highly revered former Provincial Ecclesiastical Governor and renowned monk. His statue and wax effigy are enshrined in the Vihara, attracting devotees who come to pay their respects.

Sacred Relics: Today, the temple’s main Vihara houses Royal Relics of the Buddha (Phra Borom Saririkathat), serving as a major focal point for worship and spiritual devotion.

Located in the heart of the city, the temple is easily accessible and frequently visited by both locals and travelers. Annual ceremonies, significant cultural events, and auspicious rituals are held here, drawing crowds throughout the year and adding to its vibrant atmosphere. A visit to Wat Ko Lak also allows easy access to nearby attractions such as the Provincial Hall, Prachuap Beach, and the city’s local walking streets. Its convenient location makes it a must-visit spot for anyone exploring Prachuap Khiri Khan.
