Pratun Cave, commonly known among locals as Khao Xian, is located in Phra Phutthabat District, Saraburi Province. The site is distinctive for its dual role as both a Buddhist religious site and a social welfare foundation. The name “Pratun Cave” originates from the physical shape of the cave chamber, whose rounded stone ceiling resembles a boat canopy, reflecting local naming wisdom. The cave was discovered during the Ayutthaya period, along with the discovery of the Buddha’s footprint, highlighting its long-standing religious significance.

Inside the cave, several Buddha images and sacred objects are enshrined, including a Chinese shrine and a vegetarian hall. These elements reflect the long-established coexistence of Thai and Chinese Buddhist beliefs. The atmosphere within the cave is calm and serene, making it a spiritual destination for worshippers seeking blessings and inner peace.

The heart of Pratun Cave is the Pratun Cave Welfare Center for the Elderly, which provides shelter and care for underprivileged senior citizens. Visitors not only come to pay respect and make merit, but also have the opportunity to share compassion through donations and support for the foundation’s activities. The surrounding environment conveys a sense of simplicity, tranquility, and charitable spirit.

The area around the cave is embraced by limestone mountains, creating a cool and refreshing natural setting that is ideal for mental relaxation. For those who enjoy light adventure, it is possible to hike up to Khao Xian Summit by climbing more than 700 steps to reach a viewpoint offering 360-degree panoramic views of Phra Phutthabat District. At the summit stands a stupa enshrining Buddha relics, constructed during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV).

Private Car:

• From Bangkok, take Phahonyothin Road towards Saraburi-Phra Phuttha Bat. At Phra Phuttha Bat Market, turn into Highway 3020 and drive for about 3 km. The entrance to the care center is clearly visible.

Public Transport:

• Take a Bangkok-Lopburi van, get off at the old Phra Phuttha Bat Market, and hire a local motorcycle taxi to the cave.

•  If you plan to climb Khao Sian, be physically prepared, bring water, and wear sneakers as the stairs are numerous and steep.

• To donate food or supplies to the care center, it is recommended to call the foundation beforehand to ask for their current needs.

• The best time to visit is in the morning (08:00 - 10:30) to avoid the afternoon heat during the climb.

• Dress politely, as this is both a temple and a residence for the elderly.
