Japanese Army WWII Memorial is a historically significant site that played an important strategic role during World War II. Between 1943 and 1945, the Khao Daeng area was used as a troop resting point and a major command base for the Imperial Japanese Army, which moved forces from northeastern Thailand toward Kanchanaburi Province to support the construction of the Thai–Burma Railway, commonly known as the “Death Railway.”

Khao Daeng is a limestone mountain with a solid geological structure that provided natural protection. The Japanese army excavated tunnels deep into the mountain to serve as living quarters, weapon and supply storage areas, and temporary medical facilities. The primary purpose of these tunnels was to conceal troops and facilities from Allied aerial attacks.

Today, many historical traces remain clearly visible. Visitors can explore the tunnels and historical routes within the area, some of which are still in relatively good condition, offering insight into the living conditions and daily life of Japanese soldiers during the war.

The surrounding area also contains several large craters caused by wartime bombing. Some of these craters have since filled with water and become small natural ponds, standing as physical evidence of the violence and impact of the war on this site.

In addition to its historical value, Japanese Army WWII Memorial is located within Namtok Sam Lan National Park. As a result, the area is rich in forest and natural scenery, making it an ideal destination for those interested in historical tourism combined with nature walks and learning about the past through authentic locations.

• From Saraburi town, take Phahonyothin Road toward Bangkok, then turn left onto Highway 3042 toward Namtok Sam Lan National Park. Follow the signs for Wat Phra Phutthachai and Khao Daeng.

• Situated near the Phra Phutthachai temple area.

Preparation:

• It is advisable to inform national park rangers before exploring. Wear sneakers or hiking shoes, as some paths are steep and forested.

Timing:

• Visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. Allow 1–2 hours for a thorough exploration.
