“Adventure along a unique red-tinted limestone cliffside trail to reach one of the most breathtaking sunset viewpoints in Uthai Thani.”

Pha Raed Mountain is a limestone mountain distinguished by its steep cliffs that glow red-orange under the sunlight. Located within the Tham Prueton Wildlife Sanctuary, the surrounding area still preserves its ecosystem, including dry evergreen and mixed deciduous forests. It is home to diverse wildlife and birds, offering visitors both the excitement of adventure and the tranquility of nature.

What makes this mountain particularly remarkable is its “Blood Cliff” or red cliff, formed over millions of years as minerals in the limestone reacted with air. The hiking trail to the summit is relatively short but steep, interspersed with sharp rocks. Hikers encounter rare plants and green moss clinging to rock crevices, creating a mysterious and stunning prehistoric-like atmosphere.

Pha Raed also holds historical and cultural significance. Locals believe the red cliff is sacred, and it was once a refuge for brave hunters and warriors. Local legends describe the mountain as a lookout point and a shortcut connecting villages. The surrounding area was historically a hunting and foraging ground for indigenous communities, making Pha Raed both a natural symbol and a repository of local heritage and stories.

At the summit viewpoint, visitors are treated to a 360-degree panorama of green rice fields, nearby villages of Lan Sak District, and the distant Huai Kha Khaeng mountain range. The cool breeze across the cliffs refreshes climbers after their ascent, especially during sunset when the orange light reflects on the red cliff, transforming it into a breathtaking copper hue.

Pha Raed is a popular destination for hikers, campers, and landscape photographers seeking to capture the contrast between the red cliffs and the lush greenery below. The summit offers a peaceful and private atmosphere, ideal for relaxation and reflection. Visitors are invited to discover the hidden beauty behind the red cliffs and experience the heart of Uthai Thani, learning about the historical and cultural significance of the local community in every step.

Photography:

  • The "Golden Hour"—roughly one hour before sunset—is the best time to capture the cliffs at their most vibrant red and orange.
