“It is a dark bronze statue, approximately 2.2 meters tall, depicted in a walking posture. The right hand holds a spear, while the left rests another over the shoulder, symbolizing bravery and expertise in elephant capturing and warfare.”

Phraya Surin Phakdi Sri Narong Changwang (Pum) is an important historical figure of Surin, playing key roles in administration, military affairs, and elephant culture—an essential identity of the region.

Early Background and Role
He was originally the leader of “Mueang Thi,” an ancient community of the Kuy (Suay) ethnic group, known for their expertise in capturing wild elephants. This community played a significant role in the economic and military systems of early Thai states, as elephants were strategic resources used in warfare and symbols of power.

With his exceptional skills in capturing and training elephants, he gained recognition from the central authority and was appointed to serve during the late Ayutthaya period, continuing into the Thonburi period, when manpower and resources were in high demand.

Establishment of Surin
Due to his contributions, he was appointed as the first governor of Surin. He played a crucial role in organizing the settlement into a structured city, including governance, population consolidation, and strengthening stability in the southeastern frontier of Siam.

The name “Surin” is believed to derive from “Sura” (hero/deity) and “Indra,” reflecting greatness and power—aligned with the city’s role as both an administrative center and a major elephant hub.

Significance of the Monument Location
The Phraya Surin Phakdi Sri Narong Changwang Monument stands on the site of the original city pillar, which in Thai belief represents the spiritual and administrative center of a city. Its location symbolizes his true role as the founder of Surin.

The statue is designed in a walking posture rather than standing still, representing leadership, progress, and the founding of the city. The spear he carries symbolizes a warrior and leader, while also connecting to elephant culture and mastery over large animals.

Rituals and Contemporary Beliefs
Today, the monument serves as a spiritual center for the people of Surin. Ritual ceremonies are regularly held, especially during the Surin Elephant Festival, when hundreds of elephants are brought to pay respect to his spirit—reflecting beliefs in elephant masters and ancestral guardians.

Locals also visit to make vows and pray for success in work, safe travels, and protection, believing that he continues to safeguard the city.
