“Seven-tiered Mae Koeng waterfalls, century-old golden teak forest, peaceful mountains, and Mae Chok Hot Spring nearby.”

Wiang Kosai National Park covers approximately 410 square kilometers (256,250 rai) across Long and Wang Chin districts in Phrae Province, and Thoen, Sop Prap, and Mae Tha districts in Lampang Province. The landscape consists of complex high mountain ranges, with Doi Mae Koeng (1,267 meters) as one of the prominent peaks.

The park contains diverse forest types including hill evergreen forest, tropical evergreen forest, mixed deciduous forest, dry dipterocarp forest, pine forest, and highland grasslands. It serves as an important watershed area feeding into the Yom River and several other northern river systems.

Rich biodiversity can be found throughout the park. Wildlife species include wild boar, Asiatic black bear, tiger, serow, and numerous bird species. One of the most remarkable features is the century-old golden teak forest (Dong Takian Thong), where massive trees require 3–4 people to encircle their trunks.

Major attractions include:

Mae Koeng Luang Waterfall and Mae Koeng Noi Waterfall, both cascading in multiple tiers. The word “Koeng” in the local dialect means “stairs,” referring to the step-like limestone formations. Additional waterfalls include Mae Sin, Mae Chok, Mae Pak, Mae Rang, and Khun Huai Waterfalls.

Another highlight is Mae Chok Hot Spring, located about 5 kilometers from the park headquarters, with water temperatures reaching approximately 80°C, perfect for relaxing after trekking.

Facilities include a visitor center, welfare restaurant, camping grounds, and accommodation units, making the park suitable for both nature enthusiasts and families.

How to Get There
  • By Car: From Phrae town, take Highway 1023 toward Long District, continue on Highway 11 (toward Lampang), then turn onto Highway 1125 leading directly to the park headquarters. Total distance is approximately 70 kilometers.
