“Lion-shaped stalactites, natural rock tunnels, and chances to spot wildlife like serow in a rich tropical forest setting”
Tham Thanawas Cave (Tham Thanawas Cave) is one of the hidden natural highlights of Si Satchanalai National Park, featuring a medium-sized limestone cave nestled deep within lush tropical rainforest. The cave was formed over thousands of years by underground water erosion, creating multi-layered chambers and fascinating geological formations
Inside, visitors will find intricate stalactites and stalagmites, some resembling a lion’s head, along with cave walls that appear similar to polished marble. A key feature is the natural rock tunnel, formed by geological shifts, resembling an ancient underground water passage and adding excitement to the exploration experience
The journey to the cave involves a 1.5-kilometer forest trek (ประมาณ 30–45 minutes) through shaded tropical terrain rich in biodiversity. Along the way, visitors may encounter rare plants such as orchids, ferns, and Dracaena loureiri, as well as wildlife signs including serow, monkeys, and various bird species
Inside the cave, the temperature remains cool year-round with high humidity. Some areas can be slippery, so caution is advised. The cave is also home to thousands of bats, which emerge at dusk—creating a remarkable natural spectacle
Ecologically, the cave plays an important role as a minor watershed source, supporting the surrounding forest ecosystem. It is ideal for adventure travelers, trekkers, and nature study enthusiasts
Visitors are recommended to spend around 2–3 hours in total (including trekking and exploration). Starting early in the day is advised for safety and a more enjoyable experience
