Chaloem Phrakiat Rama IX Forest Park, also known as Chaloem Phrakiat 80th Birthday Anniversary Park, is a large public park and learning center in Sisaket Province. It was established to honor His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) on the auspicious occasion of his 80th birthday anniversary. The park was designed to serve as both a “green lung of the city” and a “community activity center.”The area was originally a natural wetland known as “Huai Nam Kham Reservoir,” an important water source for Sisaket city. It was later transformed through a major landscape development project that included the construction of an island park, roads surrounding the reservoir, public recreation areas, and landscaped gardens, eventually becoming one of Sisaket’s most important landmarks. One of the park’s most distinctive features is its location on an island in the middle of the reservoir, creating a cool and relaxing atmosphere throughout the day. During the mornings and evenings, refreshing breezes blow continuously across the water. The park is filled with large trees, lawns, and landscaped gardens, making it ideal for relaxation, jogging, cycling, and outdoor exercise.
In the evenings, the park becomes a popular gathering place for local residents who come to walk, run, cycle, and exercise, earning it the nickname “the lung of Sisaket City.”The park’s most iconic attraction is the “Sri Lamduan Commemorative Tower,” an approximately 84-meter-high observation tower and one of the tallest viewing towers in northeastern Thailand. The tower was designed as a symbol of Sisaket Province. Inside are several exhibition floors featuring the province’s history, local culture, traditional lifestyles, and the royal projects of King Rama IX.The top floor serves as a 360-degree observation deck overlooking Sisaket city, Huai Nam Kham Reservoir, surrounding agricultural fields, and even the Phanom Dong Rak mountain range on clear days. The most popular visiting time is late afternoon before sunset, when visitors can enjoy panoramic city views and beautiful reflections on the water.
Another major attraction within the park is the “Sisaket Aquarium,” the first aquarium in Thailand’s lower northeastern region. The aquarium is divided into several exhibition zones featuring Mekong freshwater fish, ornamental fish, marine life, and rare aquatic species. The highlight of the aquarium is its underwater tunnel, where visitors can walk through and observe schools of fish up close. It is especially popular among children, families, and educational travelers. The aquarium also provides educational exhibits about aquatic ecosystems, environmental conservation, and local fish species found in northeastern Thailand. At night, decorative lighting illuminates the tower, bridges, and surrounding park areas, creating a completely different atmosphere from the daytime. The park becomes a popular location for photography and evening relaxation, especially during local festivals when additional lights and cultural events are held throughout the area.
