Chiang Saen National Museum is located within the city of Chiang Saen, a historically significant area of ​​the Lanna Kingdom and earlier in the ancient Chiang Saen culture. The museum was established to collect, preserve, and display artifacts discovered in the upper Mekong River basin, particularly in Chiang Saen district, which was once an ancient city center playing a crucial role in religion, trade, and arts and culture. The museum building is designed to be simple and harmonious with the old city atmosphere, allowing visitors to continuously perceive the historical context of the area from the exterior to the interior of the exhibitions.

Inside the museum, a diverse range of artifacts reflecting the development of art and beliefs in the Lanna region are on display. One of the most important groups is a collection of Chiang Saen-style Buddha images, characterized by their serene and well-proportioned forms, clearly showing the influence of early Lanna Buddhist art. Other artifacts include stone inscriptions, Sangkhalok pottery, and other objects related to the lives of people in the past, reflecting the trade networks between Southeast Asia and China during different periods. These pieces of evidence are not only of artistic value but also of archaeological importance in understanding the past social structure of Chiang Saen.

In addition to its permanent exhibits, the museum serves as a center for the study of history and archaeology in the upper Mekong River basin. Through the continuous collection of archaeological excavations, the exhibition's content is constantly updated and expanded with new knowledge. This allows visitors to learn about the development of Chiang Saen from prehistoric times to the Lanna Kingdom in a logical sequence, encompassing aspects of religion, politics, and cultural exchange.
