Phra That Chom Kitti is an important historical site in Chiang Saen District, located on Doi Chom Kitti hill outside the old city walls of Chiang Saen. It is considered one of the sacred pagodas deeply connected to the development of the Lanna Kingdom and the ancient city of Chiang Saen. The pagoda is a Lanna-style "twelve-sided polygonal" structure with a multi-tiered square base supporting a main body adorned with Buddha images in niches on all four sides, topped with a bell-shaped spire. This architectural style reflects the influence of traditional Chiang Saen Buddhist architecture in northern Thailand.

Several historical records and Lanna chronicles suggest that the construction of Phra That Chom Kitti may be related to a king of the early Yonok Chiang Saen Kingdom, mentioning King Phangkharat as playing a role in the construction of Chiang Saen around the 15th century CE. However, historians and archaeologists consider this information to be more based on "local chronicles and legends" than conclusive archaeological evidence. Therefore, an official year of construction cannot be determined, but it is believed that the pagoda has been developed since the ancient Lanna period and underwent several restorations in later periods, particularly during times when Chiang Saen was still a continuously settled city.

The area around Phra That Chom Kitti is also a place of religious worship for the local community. It holds significant importance as a center of faith for the people of Chiang Saen and pilgrims who come to pay homage and seek blessings. Furthermore, Doi Chom Kitti offers a natural viewpoint providing panoramic views of the Mekong River and the city of Chiang Saen. This makes the area valuable in terms of religion, history, and cultural landscape.

Currently, Phra That Chom Kitti is cared for as an ancient monument and cultural tourist attraction. The Fine Arts Department and the local community play a role in its conservation and restoration efforts, ensuring that the architecture and historical value of the pagoda remain for future generations to study and worship.
