Wat Phra That Pha Ngao (Wat Phra That Pha Ngao) is located on a hillside along the Mekong River in Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province. This area holds great historical importance as part of the ancient Lanna Kingdom and lies near the famous Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. This makes it both a spiritual center and one of the most significant scenic viewpoints in Chiang Rai.

The temple sits on a natural rocky hillside stretching along the Mekong River, offering clear panoramic views of the river’s winding course and international borders. Historically, this area served as an important trade route and ancient settlement of Chiang Saen, resulting in the discovery of numerous archaeological artifacts and Buddhist relics.

The name “Pha Ngao” comes from a large rock formation on the hillside that casts a distinct shadow under sunlight. Locals once used it as a landmark and sacred site. Later, the discovery of Luang Pho Pha Ngao, an ancient Chiang Saen-style Buddha image found inside a cave beneath a ruined stupa, elevated the site’s spiritual significance. It has since become a highly revered Buddha image and a spiritual center for both locals and visitors.

The temple was later restored and developed into a cultural and religious tourism site, blending traditional Lanna architecture with modern design. A key highlight is the Phra Borom That Phutthanimit Chedi, a white pagoda located on the hilltop, serving as a major worship site and a prominent landmark visible from the Mekong River. It is also regarded as one of the most beautiful Mekong River viewpoints in Chiang Rai.

Another major attraction is the Pha Ngao Skywalk, a glass walkway extending from a cliff at approximately 400 meters above sea level. It offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the Mekong River, surrounding mountains, and the Golden Triangle region. During early mornings, mist often blankets the area, creating a breathtaking landscape resembling a natural painting.

The temple complex also serves as a cultural learning center featuring a local textile museum and exhibitions on traditional Chiang Saen lifestyle. • From Chiang Saen town, take Highway 1290 along the Mekong River heading east for about 4–5 kilometers. The temple entrance will be on the right-hand side, with a spacious parking area available for visitors.
