“Worship Phra Chao Ton Luang, a grand Chiang Saen–style Buddha image; admire the architectural transition between Lanna and Rattanakosin styles; and explore the historic site of the royal oath-taking ceremony in central Lampang.”

Wat Boonyawat Wihan, formerly known as “Wat Klang Muang” or “Wat Klang Wiang,” is a historic temple over 400 years old, located at the geographical center of Lampang’s third-era city plan. It served as both the spiritual and ceremonial heart of the city.

In 1804 (B.E. 2347), during the reign of Chao Luang Kham Som, the old viharn was dismantled and rebuilt. Additional religious structures—including a chedi, monks’ quarters, and a scripture hall (Ho Trai)—were constructed. The temple underwent several name changes, such as “Wat Klang Luang Chai Santhan” and “Wat Luang Boonyawat Bamrung,” before finally becoming Wat Boonyawat Wihan, in honor of Chao Boonyawat Wongmanit, the last ruler of Lampang.

Historically, the temple was the venue for the sacred Oath of Allegiance Ceremony (Phithi Thu Nam Phiphatsatya), where northern rulers pledged loyalty to the monarchy, underscoring its prestige and importance.

The Grand Viharn of a Transitional Era

The present viharn, completed in 1914 (B.E. 2457), represents a significant architectural “transitional period,” blending Central Thai (Rattanakosin) influences with traditional Lanna craftsmanship. This harmonious fusion distinguishes it from rural temples that retain purely Lanna styles.

Inside enshrines Phra Chao Ton Luang, a Chiang Saen–style Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture. The statue measures approximately 1 wa and 2 sok (about 3 meters) across the lap and 2 wa and 14 inches in height_, radiating serenity and compassion. The parallel rows of large pillars inside the viharn create impressive depth and symmetry, offering a striking visual perspective.

A Living Heritage on a Historic Road

Although the temple grounds are relatively compact, they are rich in artistic treasures, including traditional Lanna murals and an elegant Ho Trai (scripture hall) that reflects Lampang’s distinctive craftsmanship.

Located on Boonyawat Road—the city’s main historic avenue used for major parades and festivals such as Songkran—the temple stands as a silent witness to Lampang’s significant civic events. In front of the temple, visitors can often see the iconic horse carriages, a proud symbol of Lampang known as the “City of Horse Carriages.”

Today, the temple also serves as an important Buddhist education center for the Sangha in Lampang Province, maintaining its role as a living spiritual institution rather than merely a historical monument.
