“Wat Pratu Pong features a beautiful Lanna-style viharn with intricate glass-decorated stucco gables, located near the historic Pratu Pong city gate, and houses ancient mural paintings inside the viharn.”

Wat Pratu Pong is an important historic temple located in the Wiang Nuea old town area of Lampang, near the remains of the ancient city walls of Khelang Nakhon. The temple takes its name from “Pratu Pong,” the northern gate of Lampang in the past. In the local Lanna language, the word “Pong” refers to a hole or opening, symbolizing the gateway passage through the old city walls.

Historical records suggest that the temple was built around 1846 CE (B.E. 2389) during the reign of Chao Luang Borirak Khumchai, the ruler of Lampang at that time. The temple served as a spiritual center for local communities living near the northern wall of the old city.

The highlight of the temple is the Lanna-style main viharn, constructed with brick and mortar and preserving traditional northern Thai architectural elements. The multi-tiered roof follows classic Lanna design, while the front gable features elaborate stucco patterns of celestial figures and floral motifs decorated with gilding and colored glass that sparkle beautifully in sunlight.

Inside the viharn stands a graceful Lanna-style Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture, surrounded by ancient mural paintings depicting stories from the life of the Buddha as well as scenes of traditional Lanna life. The murals display delicate lines and a distinctive artistic style that reflects the cultural heritage of northern Thailand.

Behind the viharn stands a bell-shaped chedi influenced by both Lanna and Burmese art, while the temple grounds also include a traditional wooden scripture hall (Ho Trai) raised on an elevated base, reflecting the wisdom of traditional architecture designed to protect sacred scriptures from moisture and insects.

Due to its artistic and historical significance, Wat Pratu Pong has been registered as an ancient monument by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand, preserving the peaceful and authentic atmosphere of Lampang’s old town. Today, it remains a quiet and culturally rich destination for visitors interested in Lanna architecture, Buddhist art, and the historical heritage of Lampang.
