“Experience the beauty of the Three Chao Khun Pagoda, also known as the Purple Pagoda, a contemporary architecture built to commemorate the former abbots who contributed greatly to Trat Province.”

Phai Lom Temple is a temple of great significance in terms of history and society for Trat Province. It was established during the early Rattanakosin period, around 1782, which was close to the time of the founding of Bangkok as the capital. The name "Wat Phai Lom" originates from the original natural landscape of the past, which had dense bamboo forests surrounding the temple construction area. This reflects the abundance of natural resources in the lowland areas of Mueang Trat District at that time. Today, this temple is not just a place for religious ceremonies but also serves as a center for Dhamma studies and an area for organizing important provincial cultural activities passed down through many generations.

The prominent symbol and memorable image for tourists when visiting is the Three Chao Khun Pagoda, or what the general public commonly calls the Purple Pagoda. This is because the pagoda body is painted in light and dark purple tones, contrasting with exquisitely crafted gold patterns. This pagoda has a contemporary applied architectural form, with the top part influenced by the "Phum Khao Bin" shape, which is a delicate traditional Thai art. Choosing purple as the main color tone has a significant meaning, conveying peace, mercy, and loyalty. Additionally, it is a soft color when hit by morning and evening sunlight, making the pagoda look modern while maintaining its solemnity as a sacred religious site.

The main objective of building this purple pagoda was to serve as a memorial to the three highly qualified former abbots of Wat Phai Lom, namely: Chao Khun Wisai Wachirakit, Chao Khun Phra Wimon Methacharn, and Chao Khun Phra Wimon Methacharn (Chiek Thitadhammo). All three were venerable monks highly respected by the people of Trat due to their important roles in laying the foundation for education and social development in the area. Inside the pagoda, the space is neatly organized to enshrine statues and the ashes of the three Chao Khun for Buddhists to pay respects and remember their goodness. The interior atmosphere is airy and quiet, suitable for meditation and spending time peacefully reflecting on Dhamma principles.

Around the pagoda, the landscape is decorated with gardens and clean stone walkways. Decorative trees have been planted to help make the pagoda stand out grandly amidst various plant species. The specialty of Wat Phai Lom is the proportional space management between the Phutthawat zone for ceremonies and the Sangkhawat zone for the monks' residence. Tourists who visit will feel the excellent order and maintenance, reflecting "Green Temple" management that is friendly to the environment and visitors. Furthermore, within the temple grounds, there is a Dhamma garden with moral signs inserted at various points so that those walking through gain knowledge along with enjoyment.

In terms of art, the purple pagoda is considered an interesting case study of the fusion between traditional art and contemporary concepts. The stucco patterns decorating the arches and windows of the pagoda are delicate and represent the identity of local craftsmen. Visiting this temple is, therefore, not just about making merit according to tradition but also an opportunity to experience one of the most outstanding architectural works in Eastern Thailand. Wat Phai Lom continues to serve as a spiritual lighthouse that refines and gathers the faith of Trat people firmly, ready to welcome visitors with joy under the stable shadow of Buddhism forever.
