Legend and History of the Relic: According to legend, during the Buddha's lifetime, he traveled to Phu Tem mountain, where the Naga, who guarded the mountain, mistook him for a Garuda and fled. After listening to the Buddha's teachings, the Naga became enlightened and the Buddha gave him a lock of hair as a relic. The Buddha then instructed his disciple, Ananda, to place a bone relic (from the right eye) alongside the hair relic when the Buddha passed away. This led to the creation of Phra That Phu Tem (later called Phra That Doi Yuak). The temple underwent significant restoration in 1982, with a new structure built around the original relic.

Pagoda: The golden pagoda stands as a majestic symbol of Lanna architecture. It is surrounded by four shrines, each containing a Buddha statue. The pagoda is beautifully adorned with colored glass mosaics, and its pinnacle is topped with a golden umbrella (chatra). There are also smaller pagodas at the four corners of the temple.

The Temple Hall (Vihara): The vihara is built in traditional Lanna style, with a beautiful gable roof made of wooden shingles. The decorative carvings on the wooden beams include intricate patterns of flora and the 12 zodiac animals. The wooden carvings of the Naga serpent and elephants on the temple's foundation further showcase the artistic craftsmanship of this sacred site.

By Car:

• From Phayao city, take Phayao-Chiang Muan Road (Highway 1021) heading towards Dok Khamtai District.

• Turn onto Ban Tham-Pong Road (Highway 1091) for about 90 kilometers.

• Once you reach the town of Pong, continue straight for another 2 kilometers and look for the left turn to the temple.

• The road is well-marked with signs, and the asphalt road is suitable for all vehicle types.

• Take a public bus from Phayao Bus Terminal to Pong District.
