“The blend of faith and architectural beauty with the natural landscape features "Phra Phuttha Suwannachinracha," or "Luang Pho Khao," a large, white Buddha statue in the Maravijaya posture, majestically situated on a mountaintop, making it one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Khon Kaen province.”

Wat Phra Bat Phu Phan Kham is considered one of the most important Buddhist landmarks and viewpoints in Khon Kaen province. Located on the slopes of Phu Phan Kham mountain in Ubon Rat district, this place is not only a peaceful place for meditation but also a symbol of the strong faith that the people of Isan have in Buddhism. What makes this temple memorable is the "Naga Staircase," or what locals call the "Staircase of Faith," which has an impressive 1,049 steps. It gracefully ascends from the base to the summit, flanked by railings adorned with brightly colored Naga serpents that seem to be guiding Buddhists up to this sacred land.

Upon reaching the summit, the first thing that catches the eye is "Phra Phuttha Suwannachinracha," popularly known as "Luang Pho Yai" or "Luang Pho Khao" (the Great Buddha or White Buddha). This pure white Buddha statue, in the Maravijaya posture, measures 8 meters wide at the base and 14 meters tall including the base. It stands majestically on the mountaintop, against the vast sky. The statue is beautiful and graceful, yet also exudes an awe-inspiring presence. Nearby, there is also a replica of the Buddha's footprint enshrined in a pavilion, a popular spot for Buddhists to worship and pray for blessings in life.

In addition to its outstanding architecture and sacred sites, the summit of Phu Phan Kham Mountain offers a premium viewpoint providing a 360-degree panoramic view of the Ubolratana Dam. From here, one can see the vast expanse of azure water contrasting with the distant Phu Phan mountain range, observe the daily lives of local fishermen paddling their boats out to sea, and clearly see the grandeur of the dam. The atmosphere at the summit is cool and refreshing from the constant mountain breeze, making it an ideal place to relax, unwind, and soak in the beauty of nature while making merit.

The history of this temple is deeply intertwined with the local community. It developed from a small mountain hermitage into a well-equipped temple and a destination for pilgrims from all over the country. The challenge of climbing over a thousand steps is a test of perseverance for the faithful. Although there is now a paved road allowing easy access to the summit, hiking remains a popular activity for those who want to exercise and immerse themselves in the surrounding community forest. Wat Phrabat Phupankham is therefore a place that perfectly combines the history, art, culture, and beauty of the Isan region.
