“Pay homage to the Holy Relics of the Buddha, specifically designated for those born in the Year of the Rat, and admire one of the most exquisite Lanna-style assembly halls in existence.”

Phra That Si Chom Thong Worawihan Temple is a royal temple with a profound history dating back to the 15th century. Situated at the foot of Chom Thong Hill, it holds immense significance as the home of the Holy Bone Relics of the Buddha (specifically skull fragments). Faith in this temple extends throughout the region, particularly among those born in the Year of the Rat, who revere it as their zodiacal pilgrimage site. This leads to a steady stream of pilgrims visiting throughout the year.

The defining characteristic that distinguishes this temple from others is the enshrinement of the Buddha relics. Instead of being sealed beneath a solid pagoda base, the relics are kept in a golden casket housed within a Prasat (shrine) inside the main assembly hall (Viharn Luang). The architecture of the Viharn is a classic Lanna masterpiece, featuring multi-tiered roofs and intricate wood carvings. This unique arrangement allows Buddhists to worship the relics in close proximity. During major religious festivals, a traditional ceremony involves pouring water through a naga-shaped spout to bathe the relics, a ritual passed down through generations.

The architecture and artistry within the temple grounds reflect the peak of Lanna artistic heritage. Beyond the main Viharn, the ordination hall and the Dhamma library are stunning examples of Buddhist art. The temple is meticulously organized into sacred and monastic zones, providing a lush and tranquil atmosphere. Furthermore, Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong serves as a premier national center for Vipassana Meditation, offering courses for both Thais and foreigners under the guidance of expert meditation masters.

The charm of visiting this temple lies in experiencing a "living faith." The area management is exceptionally clean and orderly. Staff and volunteers prioritize visitor convenience while strictly maintaining the sanctity of the site. Visitors can feel a sense of peace the moment they enter the grounds. Observing the fine details of the stucco and wood carvings provides deep insight into the dedication of ancient artisans who devoted their lives to Buddhism.

Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong Worawihan is an unmissable destination for anyone visiting Chiang Mai. it integrates historical value, exquisite architecture, and powerful spiritual faith. Paying respects here is not only about seeking blessings for the zodiac year but is also an opportunity for the mind to find peace while appreciating the perfectly preserved cultural heritage of the Lanna Kingdom.
