“An urban Japanese castle showcasing original 17th-century stone walls, rare Kara-zukuri architecture, and elevator access that allows visitors of all ages to enjoy panoramic views from the top floor.”
Kokura Castle is the most iconic historical site in Kitakyushu and the only castle in Fukuoka Prefecture located within a fully urban environment. It was originally constructed in 1602 by the feudal lord Hosokawa Tadaoki. Although the original wooden keep was destroyed by fire in 1866, the surrounding stone walls (Ishigaki) remain authentic remnants from the early Edo period. These walls were built using the Nozura-zumi technique, which utilizes natural, uncut stones and represents true samurai-era engineering.
The present castle tower was reconstructed in 1959 and is distinguished by its rare Kara-zukuri architectural style, where the top floor is larger than the floor below—an uncommon feature among Japanese castles. Inside, the castle operates as a modern interactive museum, using digital displays and immersive exhibits to explain the history of Kokura, samurai culture, and castle defense systems in an engaging and accessible way.
Among the highlights are the legendary twin tiger murals, Mukae-tora (Welcoming Tiger) and Okuri-tora (Farewell Tiger), each measuring nearly five meters in length and symbolizing strength and good fortune. The castle grounds also include Kokura Castle Garden, Yasaka Shrine, and more than 300 cherry trees, while the nearby Riverwalk Kitakyushu complex creates a striking contrast between historical architecture and modern urban design.
