“ Thailand’s first underground road tunnel, approx. 273 meters long Color-changing LED lights create a stunning atmosphere at night Popular landmark and must-visit photo spot in Betong  ”

Betong Mongkollit Tunnel is one of the most significant infrastructures in Betong District, Yala Province, serving both transportation and tourism purposes. The concept behind its construction originated from severe traffic congestion in the old town area, which is surrounded by mountainous terrain, narrow roads, and limited space for expansion.

The project was therefore designed as a “mountain-cut tunnel” to connect the old town with the newer urban expansion zone. It was excavated beneath Sud Siam Park, a small পাহา hill located in the heart of the city. At the time, this was considered a major engineering challenge, especially given the complex geological conditions and layered soil structures typical of southern Thailand.

The tunnel is approximately 273 meters long and 9 meters wide, supporting two-way traffic. Inside, pedestrian walkways are provided on both sides, allowing visitors to safely walk through, enjoy the atmosphere, and take photos.

The tunnel walls are reinforced with concrete and equipped with an efficient drainage system to prevent water seepage—an essential feature in Betong’s high-rainfall environment. In addition, proper ventilation and lighting systems have been installed to ensure safety for all users.

Although originally built to improve traffic flow, the tunnel has evolved into a prominent tourist attraction. One of its most distinctive features is the installation of colorful LED lighting, which can change in various patterns.

In the evening, these lights reflect beautifully off the road surface and tunnel walls, creating a “light tunnel” effect that attracts both tourists and photographers. This transformation has made the tunnel one of the most iconic check-in spots in Betong.

Its location is also highly strategic, as it sits close to several key landmarks, including:

  • Betong Clock Tower (city center)
  • Betong Chicken Statue (local symbol)
  • Popular shopping streets and restaurants

This makes it easy for visitors to plan a convenient walking route, starting from the town center, passing through the tunnel, and continuing to nearby attractions within a short distance.

How to Get There
  • By Car: Located in the heart of Betong, the tunnel is easily accessible via the main roads leading into the town. If you are staying nearby, you can walk or use local transportation such as songthaews or tuk-tuks. The tunnel connects the Betong Clock Tower area with the government center.
